Saturday, 10-05-2008, 02:12:55 It's Friday, and nearly the weekend. Yet I've no real desire to leave work, as I'm working on stuff that interests me, where I get to make the decisions. It's a hard-knock life. I'm off to a proshop tomorrow to get the McKinney IIs cut, hopefully I'll get to put them downrange on Sunday.   The proshop is a good 30 miles down the freeway, which will be the furthest I've driven in the mx5 so far. I probably need to get out more. |

Thursday, 08-05-2008, 00:47:31 I want this game to happen so much it hurts. |

Wednesday, 07-05-2008, 17:43:34 There is something wrong with my brain. I woke up at 4am this morning in the shower, lathered up and all. Was very much a "wtf" moment. |

Tuesday, 06-05-2008, 22:59:59 This is the best short film I've seen in ages. |

Monday, 05-05-2008, 20:17:30 More awesome Wii-mote hacks, this time creating a multitouch tablet from any surface in conjunction with a projector.. I'm seriously tempted to try this |

Monday, 05-05-2008, 03:44:20 So the hot water didn't work, and I ended up sawing the old grip into 3 pieces in order to get it off. The good news is the new one feels pretty nice. I bought these rubber glue strip things to stick the new one on (so I don't have to saw another $50 grip into three fucking pieces in order to get it off), but it takes 24 hours to set properly, so no archery for Ewan today. I was looking at the MK2s, and it looks like I screwed up the measurements and they're around an inch too long. So off to the nearest pro shop with me some evening during the week to get them cut down a bit more. Looking to get some epic speed improvements with these arrows over the ACEs, so no point having a whole superfluous   inch of carbon hanging off the back. In other news, Windows Mobile 6 on the my HTC TyTn II doesn't annoy me *that* much. No crashes so far, and it mostly works. It sometimes does things that I don't expect, and typing on a qwerty kb with my T9-trained thumbs is taking some getting used to, but so far it seems a pretty competent device. Have it synced up over pop3 to my GMail account - I tried it with the Emoze push email client, but I found it to be a bit buggy and generally flaky. I have unlimited data anyway, so polling the mailbox every few minutes is no major issue. The in-built GPS works pretty well with google maps, and when I have HSDPA coverage the maps come down about as quick as they would when I'm hooked up over wifi. Apparently there is a Linux toolchain for the device, but I haven't had the time of energy to bootstrap it. |

Sunday, 04-05-2008, 22:21:14 *sigh* The thread for the grip screw on my X-Factor stripped long ago, so I superglued the Jager on one night when it came off in the middle of a training session. Except now I want to take it off. As I write this, the X-Factor is soaking in a hot bath in an attempt to weaken the superglue. At least I didn't use epoxy. |

Friday, 02-05-2008, 05:44:38 Ah yes, bugs that only happen in the ship binary. Always remember, this is the life I chose. |

Friday, 02-05-2008, 05:21:59 Just got the car back from the shop - got a new top put on as the old wone was well passed its sell-by date. Got it detailed whilst I was at it, and it now looks like a pretty god-damn decent god-damn car. Pity I didn't take some "before" shots to compare. |

Thursday, 01-05-2008, 05:22:38 Now pay attention, 007. memset() and memcpy() do vastly different things. |

Tuesday, 29-04-2008, 01:59:16 Some days, I wish Visual Studio, and specifically IntelliSense, a horrible death in a chemical fire. |

Tuesday, 29-04-2008, 01:10:22 DHL Fail. According to their website, they guarantee delivery by 5pm on their 2nd day service. It's 5pm, and there is no sign of my god-damned TyTn II. In other news, the McKinney IIs arrived, so I'm going to have a go at building them this evening, if I can dig out my Tri-Liner and some hotmelt. |

Monday, 28-04-2008, 18:35:12 It's 29degC outside, and it's not even fecking midday yet. I think I'll be staying in my nice air-conditioned office. |
Monday, 28-04-2008, 04:58:06![]() That is all. |

Sunday, 27-04-2008, 09:12:44 Women in LA confuse me somewhat. Archery training tomorrow. Bow shoulder moving into the subconscious, hurrah. Sleep now. |

Saturday, 26-04-2008, 00:55:05 Today I'm struck by an odd yearning for home. Not really sure why. It's been 4.5 months since I last set foot in the Glorious Republic, and most likely I won't do so again until next Christmas. Meh. |

Thursday, 24-04-2008, 01:41:32 So, I went and got myself an AT&T Tilt, aka a HTC TyTn II, as AT&T were doing refurbed ones for free with a contract. Wanted to get a contract phone anyway, I just couldn't say no. Yes, it runs Windows Mobile, but there is a fairly active hacking scene of people releasing cut-down and optimised roms for this device, so hopefully it shouldn't be too painful to use. Plus it has a touchscreen, a qwerty kb, a gps, and wifi. Shiny hardware. Now all I have to do is figure out some way of developing for the thing from my Linux box. I'm sure some bastardisation of gcc will do the job, but I've no idea if there is some kind of GUI toolkit available, or whether I'm going to have to finally cave and install Windows in a guest VM or something equally cretinous. We shall see. Haven't made it to training since the weekend, I intend to go this evening. The concentration on the bowarm continues. I think I need to trust the Jager grip more. |

Monday, 21-04-2008, 08:26:35 Weekend over, fairly quiet. Things I did: Went archery training. When it works, it's in the gold. Still working on cleaning up the wild shots. Dropped into work to babysit a build. Played a lot of Vice City. It's just more fun than San Andreas. Watched The Bank Job, and thought it was rather good. Talked to my parents. Good to hear their voices. I miss them. And now I go to bed. I'm a regular international man of mystery. |

Wednesday, 16-04-2008, 19:08:26 The final nail in the coffin of the iPhone SDK for me, it appears it's incompatible with the GPLv3. Such lovely hardware, such a cretinous SDK agreement. |

Tuesday, 15-04-2008, 08:29:31 I've been feverishly awaiting the release of the FreeRunner , the second phone to run the open source OpenMoko mobile phone stack. However, there is a serious flaw that is probably going to put me off buying one. The screen is more or less completely impossible to read in sunlight. Given (for a coder) I spend a reasonable amount of time outdoors, and I'd hoped to use the phone as a platform for a port of Targetscheme, the FreeRunner suddenly seems a lot less useful to me, which is a real pity. So, I'm currently waiting on more concrete reports of the display in sunlight. The other option is I buy a Nokia N810, which is rather shiny device, and would fulfill most of my needs quite well. A number of people in work have iPhones and iPod Touches; one of the guys in my office was showing off the GLUT teapot running on his touch. It is truly nice hardware, but I don't feel like buying a Mac just so I can write software for the thing. My last, best hope lies with some form of Android device. Whilst initially (Jesus wept) offering only a Java SDK, Google have promised a common or garden GCC target in due course. Hopefully HTC will release something along the lines of the TyTN II, but running Android instead of (Jesus wept some more) Windows Mobile. |
